Azurite Description

Azurite Description

Also referred to as the “Stone of Heaven”, Azurite is a copper-based mineral that is created by the weathering and break down of copper ore deposits.  It the 19th Century this mineral was also known as “chessylite” when it was mined at the Chessy-les-mines near Lyon, France.  The mineral gets its name from the deep azure blues that are usually found on the stones, but the colors can range from light to deep dark blue, similar to the colors in the Van Gogh painting, “Starry Night”.  This mineral can also be mixed with other crystals, mostly commonly found banded with malachite known as “azure-malachite” and also is rarely admixed with cuprite in a crystal called “bluebird.  K2, also known as “K2 granite” or “raindrop azurite”, is a white granite speckled with dots of deep blue azurite.  Among the rarest of gemstones, K2 is only found at the namesake of the stone, the K2 Mountain located on the Pakistan side of the mountain.  The azurite mineral can be found in the oxidized regions of a copper ore deposit therefore they can be located anywhere in the world.  The most known producers of azurite include the United States, Mexico, France, Namibia, Greece and Australia.

History

Azurite has been included in Ancient Egypt folklore and history in many ways.  This crystal was considered a sacred stone that was used exclusively by high priest and priestesses.  Queen Cleopatra cherished Azurite believing it heightened her physic and divine abilities.  The ancient Egyptian civilization was amongst the first to grind the crystal and use its pigment to add the blue colors in painting.  That practice was used until around the 18th century when Azurite been less available and more costly to mine.  Also, the synthetic pigments held their color better than Azurite because some of the azurite used to make the colored blue pigments would weather away giving presence to other minerals that might have been admixed within the stone.

Azurite has been linked in many other cultures throughout history.  It was linked as a stone of present in  Avalon and was used in the lost city of Atlantis.  In ancient China, the crystal was used to crack open the celestial pathways throughout our universe.  The Native American believed the crystal would help to communicate with spiritual guides.

In 2011, the Rare K2 Azurite was discovered in the Skardu Region of Northern Pakistan.  Found in the debris at the base of the K2 mountain, or Mount Godwin Austen, this stone is mined in the harsh cold areas of this mountain, the world’s second highest.
