Black Spinal Description

Black Spinal Description

Black spinel is a magnesium aluminate mineral that is part of the spinel family.  This deep, black gemstone is extremely hard and durable, which is why it is so often used with jewelry making.  Derived from the Latin word spinella, meaning “spine”, and Greek word spinos, meaning “sparkle”, these stones are usually small and unearthed in octahedron or round shapes.  Often compared in appearance to the black diamond, the mining for this mineral has decreased in the last 10-15 years.  Black spinel is usually found with rubies and sapphire, which explains why their properties are so alike.  Current mining operations can be located in Afganhistan, Myanmar, Cambodia, Russia, Thailand, India and in the United States.

History

Spinel has been mistaken for other precious gemstones ever since it’s discovery in the 4th century.  During this time in Sri Lanka, this gemstone was amongst the most revered and prized gemstones of royalty.  The red spinel from the mines in Asia were known as Balas Rubies.  They were often passed from owner to owner as part of the spoils of war.

Spinel was determined by mineralogist Jean Baptiste Louis Rome to be a different mineral than a Ruby.  Since that time, many misidentified rubies have been correctly acknowledged as spinel.  Some notably jewels are amongst the gems that were identified incorrectly.  The crown jewels of England include a large red gem the “Timur Ruby” that weighs 350 carats but is actually red spinel.  The famous “Black Prince’s Ruby”, termed after the Prince of Wales, is also spinel.

The black spinel has also been mistaken for the black diamond.  Due to the black diamond being a more recently discovered mineral, it does not have the checkered past of the red spinel.  Still, the black spinel offers the same characteristics as the precious gemstones we value today.  Its value has only increased as mining has decreased in recent years.
