Goldstone Description

Goldstone Description

Also known as the “Stone of Ambition” or “Stone of Inspiration”, Goldstone is often mistaken for a mineral but actually is a man-made stone.  This glittering form of glass was at one time known as Aventurine glass, which also means accidental glass.  Goldstone is produced in red, brown, purple, blue, green and orange.  Mostly commonly produced with copper filings, which is what produced the sparkling appearance, Goldstone can sometimes also be mixed with cobalt or manganese.  This man-made stone glass are manufactured mostly in Italy but are also produced in China, the United States and Ghana.

History

Goldstone was originally produced during the middle ages in Venice, Italy.  The Miotti clan was charged by The Doge of Venice to create a beautiful stone.  Vincenzo Miotti was a famous alchemist during the seventeenth century who was mostly credited with the discovery of the stone.  Although Italy is the only recorded discovery, there is also a legend that the stone was accidentally created earlier by Monks in Persia during the 12th century, which is why it is sometimes called the “Monk’s Stone” or “Monk Gold”.
