Malachite Description

Frequently called the “The Stone of Transformation and Protection” or “Midwife Stone”, Malachite was originally uncovered in Egypt.  It has a Greek etymology from the word “malakos”, which translates to “soft”.  Malachite can be found in nearly all parts of the world.  This green mineral stone is often intergrown with Azurite or Chrysocolla.

History

This copper based mineral stone was mined in Egypt as early as 4000 B.C. In 1400 B.C., it was used for King Tutankhamen’s tomb wall paintings. Greek scholars frequently wrote about the Malachite causing its popularity to surge throughout Europe and Asia.  It became very fashionable in ornamental jewelry wore throughout Ancient Greece and Rome and was also commonly used as a pigment in eyeshadow. Russian Czars sourced it to intricately ornament their castles built during this time.  During the Middle Ages, Malachite was used by healers to protect against curses and to cure various stomach ailments.
