Moonstone Description

Frequently called the “The Stone of New Beginnings” or “Traveler’s Stone” due to the belief that it protects and provides good luck for nighttime and water travelers, Moonstone is a type of feldspar that is aligned with female energy.  Many people are familiar with the white Moonstone but there are many colors of Moonstone including Rainbow, Blue, Peach, Pink and Black.  This stone is most commonly found in Sri Lanka, Australia and Southern India, but has been discovered all around the globe.  

History

Moonstone has a rich history of folklore and has been used for centuries in healing, spirituality and as an adornment in ancient civilizations. The name “Moonstone, was coined by the Roman historian, Pliny, due to the shimmery appearance that shifted with the phases of the moon. The Ancient Romans believed that Moonstone was formed from solidified beams of moonlight and that it bestowed love, wisdom, clarity and good fortune. They believed in the stone’s magical power as a key to prophecy.  Both the Romans and Greeks associated the stone with lunar deities.  

In India and Europe, it was also believed that the stone could reconcile estranged lovers. If two people chose to wear the stone, then they would fall in love. During the Art Nouveau period in Europe, it become a coveted stone for jewelry due to the common spiritual healing practices and trust that its presence produced wisdom, clairvoyance and good luck.
