Frequently called the “The Stone of Peace”, Amethyst is the most highly valued stone in the quartz group. It has a Greek etymology from the word “amethystos”, which translates to “not drunken”. This semiprecious stone that can found anywhere in the world, was often worn in Ancient Greece to fight off the effects of alcohol to prevent drunkenness. Although purple Amethyst is most commonly known, the quartz will sometimes be a reddish or bluish purple. When it is heat treated it changes from purple to a yellow, orange or brown and is often mistaken for Citrine.
History
In ancient Rome and ancient Greece, Amethyst's power was used to fight off the effects of alcohol due to the belief that drinking with an Amethyst cup or drinking with the quartz in your mouth would keep the drinker sober. The Greeks believed that the quartz was created when the Goddess Diana turned into a white stone after Dionysus called to her, but she did not answer, so he cried into his wine and spilled it onto the stone turning it purple. The Romans also believed that the stone could ward off the seductions of the Roman god of wine, Bacchus.
The Ancient Egyptians believed that Amethyst protected the wearer from harm. The Christian Church references the stone many times in the Bible as a representation for piety and celibacy. The quartz has been favored by royalty and clergy as a symbol for the deity of Christ and is used in the rings of Bishops. Leonardo Davinci thought that Amethyst could be used to quicken intelligence and rid the mind of evil thought due to the stone’s purity.

Agate is named after the area where it was discovered, the river Achates (now Dirillo), which is in southwest Sicily. A type of chalcedony, agate comes in a variety of colors is an illustrious mineral due to the banding of multiple colors that highlight it beauty and character. The varieties of agate can be opaque, partially translucent and sometimes completely transparent. This mineral is often dyed to distinguish the diversity of colors that help show off the layers of the stone. Due to the vast types of agate, this mineral can be found anywhere in the world, but certain rarer types of agate are only produced in certain locations. For instance, flower agate is only mined in Madagascar, laguna lace agate is only mined in Chihuahua, Mexico and blue lace agate is only mined in Nambia and South Africa.
History
Agate has been used in cultures as early as 2000 B.C. in Mesopotamia. Ancient carvings of Agate were found with the mineral being used to produce seals, jewelry and cylinders. It was also prominently used in ancient Greece and Rome. They would create signet rings with the stone and also used the stones to carve their tableware. The Roman naturalist, Pliny the Elder, believed that the stone’s wearer would amplify their persuasiveness and give them the favor of the gods.
During the Middle Ages, agate’s popularity was extremely high. The stone was used to create decorative objects and especially in the creation of amulets. In fact, it became so popular for amulets that in Germany, agate cutters halted cutting of any other stones and concentrated all focus on the production of agate amulets.
