Sometimes called the “Stone of Courage and Preparedness”, Aquamarine is often used as a “good luck” crystal. Aquamarine’s colors are pretty easy to guess considering its name. Derived from the Latin words, aqua meaning water, and marina meaning sea, aquamarine is very much like the color of the sea. Like the sea, this gemstone varies in color from a pale blue, to blue-green to a greenish blue. Aquamarine is a variety of mineral called beryl, just like its sister gemstone, emerald. Aquamarine is abundant and therefore not as valuable as the emerald gemstone. Nonetheless, the aquamarine gemstone is a hard, clean mineral that can be found in larger crystals making them valuable to collectors and great stones for jewelry. Although not as prized by collectors, aquamarine is sometimes heat treated in order to bring out more deep and true coloring. Brazil is the largest producer of the gemstone, but it is also mined in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, Mozambique, the United States, India, Afghanistan, Russia and China.
History
Aquamarine has been valued in just about all cultures through all of history. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that Poseidon (Greek) or Neptune (Roman) created the gemstone out of the seawater. Both Greeks and Romans believed that the stone held protective powers during sea travel. The Romans believed that possessing a frog gemstone carved out of aquamarine or onto the aquamarine would help turn their enemies into friends. The famous Roman naturist, Pliny the Elder, documented the stone by stating “The Lovely, aquamarine, which seems to have come from some mermaid’s treasure house. In the depths of a summer sea, has charms not to be denied”.
Other civilizations also admired Aquamarine. The Sumerians, Egyptians and Hebrews revered the gemstone believing it brought joy, happiness and granted youth. The Hebrews would adorn the breastplates of their High Priests with the stone. During the Middle Ages, aquamarine was used to detoxify and purify the body. It was used to purify the drinks of royalty to help prevent poisoning by their enemies. At this time, it was also believed that the aquamarine was the most powerful fortune telling crystal.
