Onyx is a layered silicate stone that belongs to the chalcedony group. Although agates and onyxes both have banding, the onyx stone has parallel bands of layers instead of the curved bands found in agates. Derived from the Latin word onyx which means claw or fingernail due to the shapes of the bands in the mineral, onyx can come in many colors including green, pink, brown, red, or even clear with white banding. Still, it most often is found in black varieties with white banding. The pure black onyx is actually extremely rare. Most of what is seen on the market today is a heat or chemically treated gray varieties of chalcedony that has been altered to give it a pure, rich, black color. Onyx can be found anywhere in the world, but black onyx is primarily sourced from India, Brazil, Madagascar, the United States and Russia.
History
Onyx has been mentioned in many texts including the Bible and discovered with a multitude of artifacts in many civilizations throughout history. Onyx also is mentioned in the ancient Greek stories of the gods as it was folklore that Cupid cut the fingernails of his mother Venus using his arrow. The fingernails fell to earth into the Indus River where they soaked into the stone creating the mineral, onyx. The ancient Romans would carve into the mineral as a negative relief called intaglios with raised imaged call cameos. The Romans believed that wearing black onyx amulets with the figure of mars would provide them with bravery during battle and that breastplates adorned with onyx would guarantee success and bring victory. In ancient China and India, the stone was thought to be a protective stone, keeping away evil and immoral beings.

One of the oldest known gemstones on the planet, the history of the garnet dates to the Bronze Age more than 5,000 years ago. Its name was derived from the Latin word “Granatium”, which means pomegranate due to its tiny red crystals which were thought to resemble pomegranate seeds. It is also known as the “stone of commitment” and “pomegranate stone”. Since ancient times the garnet’s traditional red color has been associated with the heart and the blood. It is believed that garnets harness the power to alleviate melancholy and inspire love, and the garnet is also known for its energizing and regenerative properties. Garnet is an amazing stone to help in times of strife and trauma, when there seems to be no way out. It helps to activate a survival instinct giving hope, courage, and strength in situations that may seem to be hopeless. Under the influence of garnet, these types of situations turn into a challenge rather than a doomed sentence and allow us to be able to act with strength and work through them.
Although garnets are mostly thought of as red, the garnet can come in a variety of colors including green, pink, orange, yellow, brown, clear, peach, or black, and is found around the world. While garnets are plentiful, green, peach, and clear are the rarest of garnet colors.
Garnets are truly magical stones plentiful in their healing properties while also amplifying the effects of other crystals. Worn in jewelry, or placed in the home or office, garnet can bring a boost of affirmation, and bravery and is a stone of positive transformation. It is also commonly used in Feng Shui and Reiki healing practices. Garnets are also known as a great stone for travelers and are often exchanged between friends and loved ones due to separation. The stone is said to protect and guard during travel and ensure the safe return of a friend or loved one.
History
Archeologists have discovered garnet necklaces, artwork, carvings, and talismans from ancient Egyptian tombs and mummies. Egyptian Pharaohs were known to have adorned themselves with necklaces and other body ornaments as the garnet was thought to be a symbol of life and good health.
Garnets were also highly valued by the ancient Greeks and Romans. They were known to use the gem in an array of jewelry pieces and various other items. Their signet rings also contained garnets to help seal valuable documents as the garnet was believed to have the power to shield and protect. This belief transcended into many other cultures and was widespread. Saxon and Celtic kings desired the gem for this reason and used it in jewelry due to its protective power. The Native Americans also believed this and thought it to guard against injury and poisoning.
In Judeo-Christian accounts, King Solomon wore the garnet into battle. During the Crusades, Christian and Muslim warriors also were adorned with the gem.
The stone grew a powerful and well-known reputation and was often given as gifts and worn by royalty in numerous cultures throughout Europe and Asia. The garnet's color and inner “fire” were thought to awaken a person’s life force, creative energy, and spirit. In Europe during the Middle Ages, clergy coveted the garnet and thought of it as a symbol of Christ’s blood and sacrifice.

The Herkimer Diamond aka the “Stone of Attunement” is a brilliant double-terminated quartz crystal that is native to Herkimer County, New York. According to author Robert Simmons, Herkimer Diamonds are a stone of the new consciousness which will accelerate and enhance human evolution. There are even some who believe that these crystals are the most powerful of the quartz crystals for healing. Herkimer Diamonds grow double terminated (natural facets on both ends), meaning they can receive and magnify the influence of other crystals making their protective and healing properties more significant. They emit energy at both ends at the same time and are exceptional for cleansing and balancing. When there is a time in life where you feel stuck, lost, visions for the future are unclear, you feel imbalanced, and fear the unknown, Herkimer Diamonds can help enlighten you to the next step and clear the fog. They promote positive transformation, reveal the path forward and help you act with discernment. While stuck in this abyss, we may be too focused on items and tasks that are not essential and are just masking the true issues which we should be addressing. The energies of this powerful crystal will clear any resistance and illuminate negative behaviors so that we may make positive modifications. When in uncomfortable situations or environments, these crystals can put you at ease and elevate calmness and serenity.
Herkimer Diamonds are very high vibration, helping to uncover the truth beneath the surface by heightening intuition and connecting you at a deeper level with source energy. Due to this ability to connect to source and universal energies, it is ideal for those looking to open psychic channels, clearing the chakras from blockages, and increasing energy flow through the body. Herkimer Diamonds are linked to cosmic connection, higher consciousness, spiritual enlightenment, and soul growth and ascension. These ancient stones are also known to facilitate communication with spirit guides, angels and ancestors. We are each powerful, divine, sovereign creator beings on this planet during our physical experience. These quartz crystals help us to uncover our true purpose when we choose to work with them. Herkimer Diamonds are also masters of protecting your surrounding environment, reducing electromagnetic pollution and radioactive energy. They are perfect to place throughout a space or use in crystal grids to eliminate any negative energies and pollution. Herkimer Diamonds are ideal for meditative practices and are known to alleviate insomnia. Lastly, these powerful gems have crystal memory and the ability to store information for access later. Due to this unique property, they pick up the feelings of the last person who handled it, so it is important to place it in the sunlight to cleanse and recharge when exchanging or after purchasing. You may also use other cleansing or charging techniques.
History
Known also as “Little Falls Diamond” or “Middleville Diamond”, Herkimer Diamonds were discovered in the late 18th century in the Mohawk River Valley in Herkimer County, New York. The very first discoveries were in the city of Little Falls and the village of Middleville, both located in Herkimer County. The crystals can be found in other places in the world such as Pakistan, China, France and Italy, however, only those mined in Herkimer County can be given the name Herkimer Diamond. The Mohawk Indians are believed to have been the first to discover the diamonds by accident. Later, some workers officially discovered the gems in the 1700’s when cutting into the dolomite. This unique find led to a diamond rush. Herkimer diamonds are estimated to be over 500 million years old and found in sediment in Little Falls called dolostone. Dolostone (dolomite and limestone) blanketed Herkimer County during the Precabrian age when it was at the bottom of the sea that at that time covered North America. Herkimer diamonds were coveted by native Americans for their powerful spiritual and healing properties. These crystals share a special relationship to the people who referred to themselves as Kanyenkehaka or “The People of The Crystals”. Early settlers and the Mohawk desired the crystals and used them in various ways including amulets, tools, and for trade.
Herkimer Diamonds are clear with a glassy sheen, and sometimes feature rainbows. They were named the official state mineral of New York in 2012. Unlike most crystals they were formed in pockets and are not attached to a matrix. Since Herkimer Diamond grows in pockets free from a surrounding matrix, they form with points on both ends (double-terminated). Quartz does not adhere to dolostone. They are currently not commercially mined due to various laws in the state of New York that limit mining which makes them a rarity.

Quartz is a hard crystalline mineral composed of silica and is considered the most powerful healing and energy amplifiers on the planet. Derived from the German word, Quarz, it is also the second most abundant mineral in Earth’s crust, only behind feldspar. China, Japan and Russia are the world’s primary producers of quartz, but the mineral can be found and is produced in all areas of the world. There are many different varieties and colors of quartz with distinct energies and special healing properties for each.
History
Quartz has been a central figure in just about all ancient cultures and civilizations. The earliest talismans of the stone date back to 75,000 B.C. Quartz was the most common material used for the mystical substance called maban in Australian Aboriginal Mythology. This substance is what was believed to give the Shaman’s their magical powers. The Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that the crystals, which the Greeks called Krystallos, were pieces of frozen ice that were so hard that they would not melt. The Roman naturalist, Pliny the Elder, was certain that the mineral was ice, but also realized that the quartz revealed prisms of light. In Europe and the Middle East, quartz was the most common gemstone used for jewelry and hardstone carving. In many cultures today, it is still used for spiritual healing and cultural rituals but due to its abundance, it has also been more commercially used for art, glass making, countertops and home decoration, frequency vibration in crystal oscillators, lasers, microscopes, scientific instruments and a variety of electronic devices.

Smoky quartz is the National Gem of Scotland and has been considered sacred there since the time of the Druids. Its color is a brownish grey, that can be almost completely transparent to opaque brown-grey and sometimes are just near black crystals. The color is produced when natural radiation, emitted from surrounding rock, triggers color centers surrounding aluminum impurities within the crystalline quartz. Smoky quartz is a very common stone that is produced regularly in India and Russia but can be mined in all areas of the world.
History
Around for Centuries, smoky quartz has been used both as a gemstone and in jewelry making due to its ease of cutting and shaping. The Druids, who were highly ranking Ancient Celts in Scotland, considered it their most sacred stone. They believed that it would guide their souls into the afterlife. The stone represented the dark power of the Earth Gods and Goddesses and most associated with the Ancient Greek goddess, Hectate, the goddess of magic. The Sumerians and Romans both used smoky quartz for ring seals and carving intaglio seals, which means that they would cuts shapes and figures into the stone. Smoky quartz was specifically used because of its hardness and ability to cut glass. In Ancient China, smoky quartz was popularly used to create snuff bottles and they used the smooth panels of the stone to protect their eyes, much like modern day sunglasses.
In more recent times, the stone gained major popularity during the Victorian era in Britain. In the 19th Century, it became trendy to wear the stone during mourning after Queen Victoria began wearing the gemstone following the death of her husband, Prince Albert. It was normal for the person to wear the stone for a period of one to two years during the time of initial grief.

Its colors vary from black, brown, green, pink, red, yellow, blue, watermelon and blue green. Its color variation spans more than almost any other gemstone. Tourmaline can be shiny, opaque, or transparent with a vitreous luster and is extremely durable with a 7-7.5 rating on the Mohs scale. This crystal is a master in its mental healing capacity. It allows us to recognize when it is safe to love and tells us when it is time to release past sorrows and trauma. When dealing with others, its energies allow us to act with compassion, wisdom, flexibility, and mindfulness. Tourmaline is an excellent stone for the broken hearted; it cleanses, purifies, and transforms any negative thoughts and emotions into positive ones. In times of turmoil, tourmaline will help to point out the culprit, find solutions to issues, and enlighten the path to take moving forward. While different colors of tourmaline have their own unique set of healing properties, in addition to those above, tourmaline works with all the chakras from the root to the crown. Tourmaline balances the meridians of the body and clears the aura. It is a wonderful stone for inner healing, encouraging universal love at every turn as it dispels disruptive feelings and emotions. If you are looking to truly understand yourself and others, live with compassion and empathy, tourmaline is a crystal you want to have by your side.
History
Known for centuries as “schorl” the name tourmaline didn’t come about until 1703. Early history of the crystal shows the name “schorl” was in use early before the name tourmaline. The namesake “schorl” was given by the town in Germany, Zschorlau. This village had a nearby mine where black tourmaline was found. The name tourmaline originates from the Sinhalese (Sri Lanka) words “tura mali” meaning “unknown gemstone of mixed colors”. In 1703, a specimen of the gem arrived in Amsterdam from Sri Lanka and at that point, it was realized to be a different stone. Tourmaline is a crystalline silicate mineral group in which boron is compounded with a variety of other minerals including aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. Like feldspar, garnet and mica, tourmaline is not just one mineral, rather it is a group of closely related minerals. It is also documented that green tourmaline was discovered in the 1500’s in Brazil by a Spanish conquistador, however, he confused it with the emerald at the time. Tourmalines were also discovered by Dutch traders in the late 1600’s or early 1700’s, with the first discovery in the United States in 1822 in the state of Maine by Elijah Hamlin and Ezekial Holmes. California’s first deposits were found in the late 1800’s. Much of this tourmaline was shipped to China to be carved. Soon after this, many Brazilian deposits of the crystal were discovered, and Brazil continues to be a top producer of some of the finest tourmalines. Brazil still holds the record for the world’s largest Paraiba tourmaline weighing 191.87 carats. American tourmaline gemstones spiked in popularity when minerologist George Kunz sold green tourmaline from Maine to Tiffany and Co. in 1876. Tourmaline is highly coveted for jewelry making due to the gem’s durability, range of colors, and beauty. The most common color is black while the bright blue green varieties with traces of copper (Paraiba), watermelon, chrome, and pink being the rarest varieties. There is a good chance that tourmaline has a much richer history than documented because it is likely that the gem was confused with other gemstone varieties making historical references hard to come by. Russian crown jewels from the 17th century contained various tourmalines. William Shakespeare had a wonderful collection of tourmaline jewelry as he believed tourmaline aided him in overcoming writer’s block. Writers of the Renaissance used tourmaline in their talismans for this same reason. The last Empress of China, Dowager Tz’u-hsi, coveted pink tourmaline. At her death, her head was laid on a pillow carved of pink tourmaline.
Tourmaline also possesses pyroelectric and piezoelectric capabilities. The piezoelectric effect is the generation of an electric voltage upon application of mechanical stress, while pyroelectricity relates to the generation of electrical charge upon heating or rubbing. Due to this unique property, it is used in pressure devices, in sonar apparatus, and in other gauges that detect and measure pressures. Its demand increased during World War II as an increase of pressure gauges was needed for submarine sonar and other needed equipment that was instrumental. Tourmaline crystals can often exhibit polarity, which means it has a different charge at either end of the crystal that creates natural magnetism.

Proper Care
To cleanse Tourmaline, use warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth to dry. Tourmaline is an excellent stone for daily wear due to it being one of the more durable stones. To charge, place in the full moonlight for a few hours, or place on or next to Selenite for spiritual cleansing and recharging. You may also pair with clear quartz to give it an extra boost. Avoid leaving colored tourmalines in the sunlight for prolonged periods of time, as this could fade the color. However, tourmalines are durable, and are a great choice for daily wear.
