Crystal pieces and Crystal lamps are naturally formed and carefully extracted; however, they often can have imperfections, inclusions, druzy pockets, what appear to be cracks or roughness, and can have variations in color. This is to be expected with authentic, natural real crystals and gemstones. While these may appear to be “imperfections” they are not. Each of our crystals and gemstones are one of a kind, have a unique story and special character. We appreciate the difference in each one of our special pieces.  Agate is named after the area where it was discovered, the river Achates (now Dirillo), which is in southwest Sicily.  A type of chalcedony, agate comes in a variety of colors is an illustrious mineral due to the banding of multiple colors that highlight it beauty and character.  The varieties of agate can be opaque, partially translucent and sometimes completely transparent.  This mineral is often dyed to distinguish the diversity of colors that help show off the layers of the stone.  Due to the vast types of agate, this mineral can be found anywhere in the world, but certain rarer types of agate are only produced in certain locations.  For instance, flower agate is only mined in Madagascar, laguna lace agate is only mined in Chihuahua, Mexico and blue lace agate is only mined in Nambia and South Africa.  

History

Agate has been used in cultures as early as 2000 B.C. in Mesopotamia.  Ancient carvings of Agate were found with the mineral being used to produce seals, jewelry and cylinders.  It was also prominently used in ancient Greece and Rome.  They would create signet rings with the stone and also used the stones to carve their tableware.  The Roman naturalist, Pliny the Elder, believed that the stone’s wearer would amplify their persuasiveness and give them the favor of the gods.  

During the Middle Ages, agate’s popularity was extremely high.  The stone was used to create decorative objects and especially in the creation of amulets.  In fact, it became so popular for amulets that in Germany, agate cutters halted cutting of any other stones and concentrated all focus on the production of agate amulets.
