Tiger eye is a stunning chatoyant gemstone celebrated for its golden-yellow to reddish-brown hues, often highlighted by black stripes. Occasionally, it is found in rare shades of pink, blue, or red. Its name originates from the French term “œil de chat,” which means cat’s eye, referring to the stone’s silky luster and mesmerizing optical effect. This unique sheen is attributed to small amounts of iron oxide and trace amounts of rutile within the stone. Though discovered globally, tiger eye is most commonly sourced from South Africa’s Northern Cape province, with additional deposits in Namibia, India, Thailand, Australia, Canada, and the United States.
This stone is renowned for its ability to enhance focus, provide grounding energy, and inspire courage and confidence. Beyond its striking beauty, tiger eye is cherished for attracting good fortune, aiding decision-making, and fostering emotional balance. Whether you're striving toward a goal or seeking clarity, tiger eye serves as a powerful and supportive ally.
History
Tiger eye’s rich history is steeped in symbolism and reverence. Often associated with the king of the jungle, its name reflects its strength and vitality. Ancient Chinese cultures believed the stone offered protection against evil and linked it to the powerful tiger. Used in Feng Shui practices, tiger eye was placed in doorways or decision-making rooms to bring balance, good fortune, and protection.
The ancient Egyptians revered tiger eye, wearing it as a tribute to the sun god, Ra, to symbolize vitality and the sun’s rays. Pharaohs used the stone to enhance their vigor, while Egyptian tombs often contained tiger eye to guide the deceased into the afterlife. Similarly, Romans valued the stone as a protective amulet, carving it into talismans or adorning soldiers’ breastplates with it during battles. In the Middle Ages, tiger eye was worn to ward off evil spirits and dispel negative energy.
