History
In Greek mythology, celestite is said to derive from the Pleiades, which is a beautiful network of stars also known as the Seven Sisters. In legend, it is thought that celestite fell from the stars on to Earth. Its name originates from the Latin word “Caelestis” or “celestial” which is then derived from the Latin word “Caelum” meaning sky or heaven. This intriguing stone has always intertwined with God and the Heavens and was known in ancient times to have been created by singing angels. It was coveted as a symbol of heavenly wisdom, serenity, harmony and truth.
Celestite was discovered in 1971 by famed minerologist Abraham Gottlob Warner where it was found in Pennsylvania (official state mineral). It is a mineral consisting of strontium sulfate that is formed in sedimentary rocks such as gypsum, halite, and limestone. Celestite holds the record for the largest geode in the world spanning 35 feet wide with single crystals within the geode measuring as large as 3 feet wide. This record-breaking geode is located in South Bass Island in Ohio 30-40 feet below the surface, and was discovered in 1897 when drilling for a well. People regularly visit this earthly wonder today.

Celestite is a soft crystal. Due to this, do not place near other gemstones as they could scratch or chip the surface. Keep away from sunlight for prolonged periods of time as the sun will fade its captivating color. To cleanse celestite, you may use lukewarm water or place it in a bowl of salt. For spiritual cleansing and charging, place on or next to selenite, or place in the light of the full moon.
