Dumortierite is a rare type of quartz that has the composition of a fibrous aluminum boro-silicate mineral. This usually blue colored stone can also be found in green, greenish-blue, violet-blue, pale blue, pink or red varieties. It is similar in look and color to lapis lazuli or sodalite so it is sometimes mistaken as such, but those who study or understand minerals can notice the difference as dumortierite is harder than both other minerals. It is also more of a lustrous, silky stone, while the other stones tend to look duller and oilier.
If you feel like you need a bit of balance and calmness in your life, dumortierite is the stone for you. The stone will push away all fears allowing you to relax, feel contentment and bring happiness to life. It helps clear the mind, enabling you to see other’s points of view. Along with providing clarity, your patience and openness will increase, giving you a better ability to problem solve. The clear and tranquil mind will see any troubles as exciting challenges instead of dreaded barriers and blockades.
As you can imagine, a calm and clear-headed person will have better opportunities and increased ability to focus on the physic world. This is why dumortierite is used and recommended for people who practice or want to push their capacities in clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience or telepathy. It will inspire you to receive messages from the spiritual world and grant the power to produce prophetic dreams.
History
Dumortierite was first found in 1881 by the mineralogist M.F. Gonnard in Chaponost, located amongst the Rhône-Alps of France. It was later named after the French paleontologist, Eugene Dumortier who had passed away five years prior to the stone being discovered. Because it was only a recently unearthed stone, you will not find mention of it in any ancient lapidaries and ancient relics have not been uncovered. Dumortierite is still produced in France to this day, but is also mined in the Japan, Norway, Kazakhstan, India, Italy, Austria, Southern parts of Africa, Brazil, Canada and the United States.
The stone has been mainly used in jewelry and for use in metaphysical healing, but it does have a history of other functional uses. Dumortierite has been used to construct spark plugs, ceramics, and porcelains. It was useful in ceramics and porcelains because dumortierite’s color can transform to an astonishing, pure white when heated.

Proper Care
Dumortierite is a relatively durable gemstone, so it does not require constant attention and special care. It is best to clean the stone with warm, soapy water. It would be wise to avoid high temperatures or abrasive cleaners, as it is with many stones.
To cleanse and charge your crystal, you can bathe the stone in full moonlight for at least four hours. You can also use a sage brush running the stone through the smoke or just rest your dumortierite in a clear quartz or selenite bowl.
