Known as “The Calming Stone” due to the stones ability to calm the mind and spirit, howlite is usually a snowy or creamy white borate mineral with black or gray veins but has also less commonly been produced in light green or blue varieties. Also dubbed “The Imitation Stone”, howlite’s commonality and porous surface brand it an ideal stone for many collectors to artificially color it to imitate natural turquoise, red coral, and lapis lazuli. Often found in cauliflower masses with an unglazed state and porcelain like texture, howlite is soured in many locations around the world including Canada, Turkey, Mexico, Germany, Russia and the United States.
History
Howlite was discovered by Henry How in 1868 in Nova Scotia. How was a Canadian chemist and minerologist who founded the stone and coined the name Howlite Cilico-Borrow-Calcite. It can to How’s attention when miners were complaining about a white stone that was getting in their way. He took notice and soon discovered it was an undiscovered mineral. Sometime after, a geologist by the name of Dwight Dana renamed the stone howlite. Howlite was often used by Native American Tribes. They often referred to it as the “White Buffalo Stone” or “White Bison Stone” due to its rarity, purity and beautiful white color like the white bison. Native American’s often used howlite for talismans for rituals and protection. They also believed howlite had curative powers for various ailments.
