  •  A member of the mica group of minerals, Lepidolite is the richest lithium composited mineral.  Sometimes referred to as the “Stone of Transition”, “Peace Stone” or Grandmother Stone”, this mineral is also called “lilalite” due to its color which can be grayish, pink or lavender.  Its name comes from the Greek word, lepidos meaning “scale”, which is a reference to the stone’s scaly appearance.  The lithium presence often causes the stone to be mined in smaller scaly or flakey aggregates.  Sometimes, the stone will have a reddish/pinkish hue or reddish/pinkish spots which are caused by the presence of manganese mixed within the lithium composition.  Lepidolite can be found all over the world, but the major sources of the mineral include Brazil, Russia, United States, Madagascar and Canada.

    History

Lepidolite’s natural occurrence next to some of the rarer earth’s elements like cesium and rubidium is what could have led to its discovery.   It was recently found by Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff in 1861, when they were searching for rubidium salts for analysis, which is what lead to the discovery of the element rubidium.  The same pair discovery the element cesium in a similar mining project.  Lithium is the richest element in Lepodolite and also the lightest metal in the world.  It is used aircrafts parts, microwaves, toasters rechargeable batteries and mobile phones.
