Chrysocolla, known as the “teaching stone” or “wise stone” has a gentle flowing subtle energy unlike the high energies of quartz. Its alluring opaque hues of blue, green and turquoise are a treat for the eyes and sooth the soul. Staring into this stone brings about a tranquility and calmness much like gazing into the blissful colors of the sea. The semi-precious stone’s role is to bring about peace, intuition, patience, transformation, and unconditional love. It allows us to tap into our own knowledge, creativity, and wisdom, while creating clarity within our thoughts. During our daily lives, there are many times we encounter times of turbulence and strife. When harnessing the gentle flow of energy Chrysocolla provides, we can become less irritable and communicate with sensitivity and tolerance.
History
Chrysocolla is found in various deposits throughout the world and has been beloved by many cultures for thousands of years. Chrysocolla can be found intermingled with other copper-bearing minerals such as malachite, turquoise and azurite amongst others. This compelling mix creates a beautiful mixed gemstone known as Eilat stone. Eilat stone is the national stone of Israel and is named for the city where King Solomon originally mined it in Africa. This explains why it is the national stone of Israel as King Solomon in legend also mined this stone in the Timna Valley of Israel.
The name Chrysocolla was originally used to describe the stone by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and botanist, in 315 BC. The word was derived from the Greek words “Chryso” meaning gold, and “Kola” meaning glue. Solder, with Chrysocolla being a main ingredient, was used in the earliest of times by goldsmiths to weld and fuse gold pieces together. Solder was coined “saterna” by the Roman’s.
Nero, a Roman emperor, was attracted to Chrysocolla for its mesmerizing green/blue color and its association to opulence and elite living. In ancient Rome, there were four factions symbolized by the color’s red, white, blue and green. Nero was a part of the green faction, which was the most dominant of all the factions. They often hosted competitions (such as chariot races) between the factions, and the winners of these competitions secured their status as superior to the others. In one such Chariot race competition, Nero himself, was a competitor and sprinkled the arena with ground green Chrysocolla powder.
In ancient Egypt, Chrysocolla was called the “wise stone” because it guarded and encouraged the mind during tumultuous meetings and negotiations. In legend, it is said those who wore it would come out of these meetings with compromises and resolutions. Cleopatra, who was an ambassador, also adorned herself in Chrysocolla due to the stone’s ability to help those who are inherently violent become more tolerant and sensitive.
In Tibet and Africa, the stone was used for healing, while in Native American cultures it has been used to strengthen the body’s resistance to illness and emotional duress.

Proper Care
To keep Chrysocolla’s energy pure, charge and cleanse once a month. Chrysocolla is best cleansed by holding the crystal under warm water and/or using smudging techniques. The crystal can be charged by placing outside or setting it in a windowsill during a full moon. You may also place it on or near clear quartz. Lastly, placing your crystals in a selenite bowl, or a selenite charging plate will cleanse and charge the crystal while keeping them clear of negative energies while in/on the selenite.
