Called the “Fire Stone” by the Inuit and Algonquin people of northern Canada, labradorite is a grayish stone with blue, green, yellow, purple and bronze iridescence. This harder feldspar stone was named after the peninsula of Labrador in Canada, where it was found. The popularity of the display of colors has produced its own signature description for the levels of brilliance in color, labeled “labradorescence”. The varieties with more labradorescence tend to be crafted into gemstones. Occurring in the world’s more mountainous regions, labradorite is usually produced in Italy, Greenland Finland, Russia, Canada and Scandinavia but is found in all areas of the world.
History
The stone was first discovered in 1770 by the Moravian Missionaries of Canada. The Inuits and Algonquin people used the mineral as a stone of magic. They believed that labradorite fell from the frozen skies of the Aurora Borealis, which produces the colors and their name for the rock, “Fire Stone”. The legend says that the Northern Lights were stuck inside the mountains off the coast of Canada but then a warrior can along and broke labradorite free with the throw of his spear. Throughout the 18th Century, labradorite was extremely popular in France and England. Although it is quite abundant, it is not often produced due to its difficulty to cut.
