Also known as fool’s gold, Pyrite is the most abundant sulfide mineral. This iron sulfide has a metallic luster and pale brass yellow color that is very similar to gold. The name pyrite is derived from the Greek word pyr, which means fire. These gemstones can be used to create sparks if struck together. In fact, there are sometimes used in flintlock firearms. It can be found in many shapes and sizes, including cubes or dodecahedral shapes. Sometimes, it is also incorrectly marketed as Marcasite, which has a similar appearance but is a completely different mineral. Pyrite is often mined alongside more precious metals like gold, copper, silver and platinum. Deposits are found worldwide but more productive mines are located in the United States, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Romania, Canada, and Sweden.
History
Pyrite has used as both and metal and sulfur throughout our history. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Incans, Native Americans amongst many other of the earliest cultures have used pyrite in creation of their civilization’s cultures. The Greeks polished it for the production of pins, earrings and amulets. The Mayan and Aztec civilizations created mirrors using pyrites as did the people in Victorian Britian. In many cases, the pyrite mirrors were included as part of the ceremonies attire that priests and noblemen might wear. In Victorian Britian, pyrite was not only used for mirrors, but it was also a favorite stone for the creation of rosettes, shoe buckles, rings, necklaces or other pieces of jewelry. The Native Americans would use the stone for a spiritual tool for mental and physical healing.
