Along with the diamond, sapphire and emerald, the ruby is one of the four precious gemstones. The ruby is a pinkish red to blood red gemstone that can have hints of purple or pink. The amount of redness is directly attributed to the amounts of chromium within the gemstone. The word ruby is derived from the latin word “ruber”, which translates to red. Typically, the more redness within the gemstone, the higher the value of the ruby. It is the third hardest gemstone behind only the diamond and moissanite. All natural rubies have imperfections in them with either color impurities or inclusions of rutile within the stone. These imperfects are often used by gemologists to distinguish between synthetic or natural gemstones.
The ruby is perhaps regarded by most as a protective stone. It has been worn throughout history to protect during battle but is commonly used today to protect the household and family. History
Many cultures have considered the ruby as a stone of protection or a stone of kings. It has long be associated with wealth, power and prestige royalty and has was believed to assist in accumulating and protecting their riches. The stone is found in many areas of the world, but the more admired mines are located in Myanmar, India and Sri Lanka.
First discovered in ancient Burma (Modern day Myanmar), the ruby was the most prized and valued gemstones for their culture. They started mining the gemstone in 600 A.D. The ancient Burmese treasured the stone to protect their soldiers. Their culture did not feel it was enough to adorn their weapons or armor with the stone, it had to be placed within their skin and flesh to prevent injury and make them invulnerable.
The ruby was very popular in many other civilizations and has been detailed in various publications. The Bible lists the ruby as one of the two gemstones created by God. Ancient Sanskrit called the gemstone, “Ratnaraj”, which translated to the King of jewels, meant for the royalty of the Indian royalty. Red is a lucky color to the Chinese, therefore the ruby as been a symbol of good luck, although they believed that any dark spots were signs of evil spirit within the stone. The ancient Roman naturalist, Pliny the Elder, discusses the gemstone natural hardness and gentle luster.
