  •  Considered a stone of poetry and truth, Sodalite is a silicate mineral that has a high content of sodium, referencing its name.  The gemstone is usually translucent blue with white inclusions but can also be found in grey, green, yellow light red and lavender varieties with a few stones more opaque than transparent.  Derived from the Greek words “soda” for sodium and “lithos” meaning stone, sodalite is sometimes termed the “sodium stone”.  Although not considered hard, this stone is durable but it susceptive to high pressures and  temperatures.  Sodalite has deposits in Brazil, Greenland, Canada, Afghanistan, Russian, India, Namibia and the United States.

    History

Sodalite was known across the Americas long before its official discovery in Greenland in the early 1800’s.  It was traded by the Caral civilization of Peru and also by the civilization of Tiwanaku in Bolivia.  It gained its magnificent reputation when Princess Margaret of England visited Canada in the 1800s.  She adored the gemstone and decided that it would be the main decoration for the Marlborough House.  For this reason, Sodalite is sometimes referred to as “Princess Blue”.
