Star ruby is a rare and valuable gemstone that exhibits a six-pointed star effect. This phenomenon is called asterism. This mesmerizing effect occurs when light reflects off of tiny inclusions of rutile known as "silk" that criss-cross within the stone. No two stars are the same with each ruby having unique growth characteristics. Star rubies are extremely rare with only one in every one hundred mined rubies have this amazing feature. Star rubies are also a very durable crystal, since they rank 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness right after diamonds.
