Also known as the “Turkish Stone” because it arrived in Europe using a trade route through Turkey, Turquoise is a light blue-to-green stone made of hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminum. Most turquoise is interspersed with other mineral of darker brown, gray or black veins. While most turquoise is readily available, the pure blue variety is very rare and valuable. The best qualities of stone are found in northeast Iran, but deposits are found in the United States, Egypt, Mexico, China, Peru, Poland, Russia, France, Afghanistan, Arabia, Australia, Brazil and Tanzania.
History
Turquoise has been around since the First Dynasty in ancient Egypt over 5,000 years ago. It was often found in tombs through the use in jewelry, used in inlay or carved into scarabs. King Tut’s burial mask was heavily and intricately adorned with turquoise. The Egyptians would call the stone “mefkat”, which meant “joy” and “delight”. Ancient Persians also decorated greatly with the gemstone. The believed the blue color signified heaven and would decorate their weapons and horse bridles with it. Native American Shamans used the stone during ceremonies to communicate with the sky spirits. Apache’s used the stone with their bows to improve their hunting skills. Even before the Native American uses, the Aztecs would also enhance the power of ceremonial masks and battle gear by adorning them with the gemstone believing that it would offer protection.
