Smoky Quartz Description

Smoky quartz is the National Gem of Scotland and has been considered sacred there since the time of the Druids.  Its color is a brownish grey, that can be almost completely transparent to opaque brown-grey and sometimes are just near black crystals.  The color is produced when natural radiation, emitted from surrounding rock, triggers color centers surrounding aluminum impurities within the crystalline quartz.  Smoky quartz is a very common stone that is produced regularly in India and Russia but can be mined in all areas of the world.

History

Around for Centuries, smoky quartz has been used both as a gemstone and in jewelry making due to its ease of cutting and shaping.  The Druids, who were highly ranking Ancient Celts in Scotland, considered it their most sacred stone.  They believed that it would guide their souls into the afterlife.  The stone represented the dark power of the Earth Gods and Goddesses and most associated with the Ancient Greek goddess, Hectate, the goddess of magic. The Sumerians and Romans both used smoky quartz for ring seals and carving intaglio seals, which means that they would cuts shapes and figures into the stone.  Smoky quartz was specifically used because of its hardness and ability to cut glass.  In Ancient China, smoky quartz was popularly used to create snuff bottles and they used the smooth panels of the stone to protect their eyes, much like modern day sunglasses. 

In more recent times, the stone gained major popularity during the Victorian era in Britain.  In the 19th Century, it became trendy to wear the stone during mourning after Queen Victoria began wearing the gemstone following the death of her husband, Prince Albert.  It was normal for the person to wear the stone for a period of one to two years during the time of initial grief.
