Watermelon Tourmaline

Watermelon Tourmaline

Tourmaline is a crystalline silicate mineral with many varieties and colors.  One of the more vibrant types is the watermelon tourmaline so named for its resemblance to the colors of the watermelon.  Like the fruit, this crystal has a green exterior and pink to red center that is usually translucent.  The change is color occurs during the growth of the crystal, when the crystal is exposed to other minerals like manganese and lithium throughout its maturation.  In 1902, watermelon tourmaline was first discovered at a mine in Newry, Maine but has since been sourced in Brazil, Nigeria, Madagascar, Afghanistan, Australia and Sri Lanka.

History

A relatively young mineral in terms of name and discovery, the first watermelon varieties of tourmaline were discovered and named in 1909.  Norwegian expeditionist, Geore R Howe, was the first to give it the name watermelon tourmaline after he uncovered it in Maine.  The largest uncovering of Maine born watermelon tourmaline was in 1972 in the Plumbago Mountain of Newry, Maine.  Some of the more beautiful specimens of watermelon are from Brazil or Oxford County in Maine.  Often found as crystal “logs”, the gem can be sliced like watermelon to highlighted it distinct variance in color.
